A Conversation with Gen. David Petraeus

Located at the heart of the scenic Vanderbilt campus, the College of Arts and Science is known for its cutting-edge research and award-winning teaching. As the oldest and most academically diverse college at Vanderbilt, the College of Arts and Science houses a rich array of departments and programs spanning the humanities, science, arts and social sciences. Students and faculty also have opportunities to study and learn in Vanderbilt's professional schools and other colleges. The College provides the individualized attention of a liberal arts college merged with the opportunities for academic discovery of a major research university. Graduate students interact with world-renown faculty in laboratories and colloquia.

Students receive a comprehensive, academically rigorous education that primes them for success in every area: scholastic, personal and professional. While adhering to a curriculum that emphasizes critical investigation and analysis, students creatively engage with scholarship, collaborate with accomplished faculty members and acquire the capacities to thrive as twenty-first century global citizens. Requirements include coursework in writing, humanities and creative arts, international cultures, history and culture of the United States, mathematics and natural sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. The First-Year Writing Seminar is a core component of the curriculum, introducing students to Vanderbilt's scholarly expectations and collegial academic culture. Every student must select a departmental, interdisciplinary, or individually designed major by the end of the sophomore year.

Students may declare a major after the completion of the second semester, but no later than the fourth semester of residence. Students declaring a major in one of the recognized fields apply to the appropriate department or program for assignment to an adviser. Students who wish to develop an interdisciplinary major must first meet with a dean. The selection of a major is quite important and is a requirement for completion of the degree. To assist in the selection process, the College of Arts and Science sponsors a majors fair every fall semester where students can familiarize themselves with the requirements for individual majors. Students officially declare their majors by registering with the Office of Academic Services for the College of Arts and Science, as well as with the chosen department s or an interdisciplinary adviser approved by the dean. Students may choose to concentrate in two or three major fields.

Artists and scientists share an unquenchable curiosity for the unknown. They also explore and question the world to create something new. Better communication approaches are needed to address this divide, particularly in the form of visual art.
