Tucked away at the southern end of Bruges is the beautiful area known as "Minnewater". The centre piece is the "Lake of Love" and" Lovers bridge". A very tranquil location within the confines of the city. So serene and peaceful. A wonderful place to relax with families or loved ones..

The origin of the Lake of Love is not as romantic as its name would indicate. It rather emerged with the help of Nature and was adapted to the needs of Bruges. In the 12th century, following the devastation caused by a storm, a new natural channel was created that connected Bruges with the sea. This allowed the city of Bruges to have an easier access to trade routes in the North Sea. The inhabitants of Bruges were able to see here an important source of income, from which the best example would be the production of lace that made the city so popular. Thus, this new channel called Zwyn was the gateway of imported wool, mainly from England, and a way outforthe famous Flemish cloth. The large number of merchant ships coming to and leaving from Bruges forced the city authorities to adapt the banks of the channeland turn it into a port that functioned as such until the 16th century, when the sediments made it impossible to keep navigating the channel.

The lake was formed by damming White Rock Creek , which today widens into the lake before continuing south out of the spillway and emptying into the Trinity River. Before it was a lake, White Rock Lake was a collection of farms owned by the Daniel and Cox families. He and his wife Frances Herndon Daniel seem to have moved to the White Rock area in the late s and early s. Daniel's son had a good friend during the civil war named Cox. When the war was over, the Cox family moved to land adjacent to the Daniel family.

Artifacts and potsherds also indicate an extensive campsite existed near the present-day spillway. The situation is so grave that insurance companies are threatening to remove all fire insurance coverage from the city. Many ridicule the idea and consider the action taken by the City to be capricious, but dam construction proceeds. The new lake is placed under the control of the municipal water department. Capacity stands at 5. Carriages are encouraged to drive across the dam to pack it down.

But most often, the cruises are less about recreation and more about education. Now, the Mullers are being recognized for their efforts by the Natural Resources Council of Maine, with the chance of winning the People's Choice Award through an online voting system.
