SUPERMAN: REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN

reign of the supermen comic

The animated Reign of the Supermen is true to the origin story, though it does deviates from the comic book source material in some big ways.

How, though, do you follow up a story in which you've killed the most recognizable superhero in the world? Media, comic book fans, and the industry as a whole had been swept up by the comic book crossover. Many fans, to the delight of DC, believed Superman might stay dead. Although initial plans called for Superman to return immediately after his death, the editors at DC knew Superman 75's success called for something bigger. In the years leading up to that event, the creative teams behind The Adventures of Superman , Superman: The Man of Steel , and Action Comics had carefully plotted out everything as the books tied together to form an ongoing narrative. Leading up to The Death of Superman , they laid out everything from Doomsday's arrival to Superman's funeral. Three months later, in the summer of , four mysterious Supermen descended on Metropolis.

The storyline not only brings back the Man of Steel to life, but also concludes The Death of Superman trilogy. The premise was that, since Superman 's death, four other supermen have appeared, claiming to be the resurrected Man of Steel, each with different powers and personalities, each having some claim to the Last son of Krypton's legacy. Each of the four superman books featured one of the four supermen, which were all created by the creative teams of those books. The Supermen were: Last Son of Krypton Action Comics , a cold, emotionless Kryptonian persona; Superboy Adventures of Superman , a teenage clone of Superman; Steel Superman: The Man of Steel , an engineer who built a high-powered suit of armor to carry on Superman's legacy; and finally Cyborg Superman Superman , who most resembled the real Man of Steel but who was a cybernetic organism. Reign of the Supermen is generally adapted along with the previous storylines, for example in the book The Death and Life of Superman. Jonathan Kent suffers a massive heart attack and is taken to the hospital.

As expected, quite a few changes are made from the source material, not just to fit the minute runtime of the film, but to also match the continuity established by the DCAU. With that said, let's look at some of the deviations made and compare them to the original story. Heartbroken about the loss of his crew and wife, Terri, Hank left Earth to explore alien culture. This movie, though, changes his background drastically, as it's Darkseid who plucks Hank from the accident. In the film, the ruler of Apokolips rebuilds Hank and sends him to infiltrate and win public favor on Earth. There is no alliance with Mongol and his Warworld, no destruction of Coast City and no plot to frame the other Supermen, like the comics.

Since its initial publication, "The Death of Superman" has been reprinted in various formats and editions. While pitching possible replacements, Ordway jokingly suggested that they should kill Superman. As Superman comic sales had declined in recent years, the writing teams felt the character had been taken for granted and decided to temporarily kill him to emphasize his importance. They wanted the crossover to surprise readers and show Superman is not invincible. The first arc chronicles Superman's fight with the monster Doomsday and concludes with his apparent death.

The Death of Superman

It feels like it was just yesterday that we saw Superman make the ultimate sacrifice to save Metropolis in The Death of Superman. Although the hero himself is still presumed to be dead, four new Supermen rise to the occasion and protect Metropolis in his absence. Each of them heroically wear the Superman emblem across their chests, which naturally leaves us questioning who the real Superman is.
